Located in Upper Maremma on the “Colline Metallifere” (Metalliferous Hills), Ampeleia is a unique project for the area aimed to create wines that express the terroir rather than follow some fashionable style, as we often see on the Tuscan coast. Run for the oenological side by Elisabetta Foradori, the estate is formed by three groups of vineyards located at different altitudes: Ampeleia di Sopra (Upper Ampeleia, 400-650 amsl) mainly planted with Cabernet Franc, Ampeleia di Mezzo (Middle Ampeleia, 250-350amsl) where the Sangiovese is the main player, and Ampeleia di Sotto (Lower Apmeleia, around 200 amsl) is the closest to the sea and where the traditional Mediterranean varietals Carignano, Alicate Nero and Alicante Bouschet are grown. The different altitudes together with the heterogeneous soil composition found in the various plots of vineyards lends to the creation of wines with a true Mediterranean character and with a complex and variegated personality.
