Charles Heidsieck is one of the great names of Champagne and produces some of the finest of all Champagne. Though started in 1851, the foundation of its modern fame rests on the work done by winemaker Daniel Thibault, whose style has come to define ‘Charles’. Thibault died in 2002 and was succeeded by his assistant Régis Camus. Between them they have won the ‘Sparkling Winemaker of the Year’ award at the International Wine Challenge a remarkable thirteen times.
Thierry Roset is the current chef de cave, working with Camus. He continues with the approach that has driven their success, which is based on the relentless pursuit of quality. The base wines are made from a selection of the best vineyards of the region (rated up to 120). They are one of the few houses to own ‘crayeres’ or chalk cellars that run under Reims. In June 2011 Charles Heidsieck was bought by the Descours family and their aim is to revitalise Charles so that its image once again matches the quality of the wines.
