Château Clarke traces its roots to the 12th century, when Cistercian monks at the Vertheuil Abbey planted the first grapevines. Much later, the Irish knight Tobie Clarke bought this land, which took on his name for good in 1818. Then, after a series of inheritances and sales, the property was bought in 1973 by Baron Edmond de Rothschild.
Beginning on that date, the vineyard was redesigned and completely reshaped to arrive at 55 hectares of winemaking land. Massive investments were made to improve the estate’s equipment and renovate the buildings.
The grapevines are now planted on clay-limestone hilltops that encourage the expression of the Merlot grape that largely dominates the vine mix (a rare feature in the Médoc district).
Special care is given to the growing and vinification methods, which are closely controlled. Grapes are harvested manually and transported in crates to a splendid wooden vat. The grapes are sorted on the table and wine flows into the tanks by gravity. The wines then age mostly in new wood barrels, where they mature for 14 to 18 months.
