The Delta farm, first established in 1848, was purchased in 2000 by four partners, including winemaker Matt Thomson and David Gleave of Liberty Wines. The aim was simple; to plant Pinot Noir and attempt to realise the potential they all felt Marlborough had for this variety.
The Delta vineyard is now just over 30 hectares in size, and its low vigour clay soils were planted in 2001/2 with the best of the new Pinot Noir Dijon clones. Vertical shoot positioning gives the vine's canopy the sunlight it needs, and the grapes the exposure they require to ripen. This specialisation in Pinot Noir sets Delta apart from the crowd in Marlborough. The Delta site is on the West Coast highway and because the hills to the south are elevated, it once served as a landing strip for light aircraft. It can be split in two: the flatter part, closer to the road, produces approachable, younger drinking wines bottled under the Delta Vineyard label, whereas the fruit from the hilly part of the vineyard produces the reserve style, Hatters Hill. Being a kiwi, Matt couldn't help but produce a Sauvignon Blanc, which is from grapes grown on a vineyard approx 30 kilometres to the east of Delta Vineyard in Dillons Point, where Matt feels Marlborough's best Sauvignon Blanc comes from.
