The name Isole e Olena came about in the 1950s when two adjoining properties – ‘Isole’ and ‘Olena’ – were purchased by the De Marchi family and combined to form one. The history of both estates stretches back hundreds of years, with the earliest documentation of Olena dating to the 12th century.
Its 45 hectares of vineyard are planted primarily on galestro soil at 350-450 metres above sea level. The property is situated in the western part of Chianti Classico, just north of the village of Castellina and west of the ridge of hills that form a natural protective barrier for vineyards in the heart of Chianti. As a result, Isole e Olena is situated in a more exposed and cooler position, which in turn results in more fragrant and elegant wines.
Paolo De Marchi has run the estate since 1976 and has become a leading expert on Sangiovese. His vineyards are superbly tended, yielding wines of the quality that have kept them ahead of the chasing pack for the past three decades. Paolo’s Chianti Classico is scented, supple and irresistibly alluring, while his flagship wine ‘Cepparello’ is one of the finest of all the Super Tuscans. First produced in 1980, it is a selection of the estate’s best Sangiovese. He also produces a world class Chardonnay, an outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon, a Côte Rôtie-like Syrah and a classic Vin Santo of amazing intensity and complexity.
