Winemaker Franco Massolino has done a wonderful job of marrying change with a respect for tradition over the years since he took over in 1994. The 23 hectare estate has been in the Massolino family since 1896 and four generations have tended the vineyards whose nature continues in part to dictate the style of wines the family produces. The comune of Serralunga d’Alba is the source of some of the greatest, most structured, robust and most long-lived Barolo, wines that often require years of ageing to show their best and this is where the family vineyards lie. From 1994, the style of the wines underwent a subtle transformation.
As a result, the young wines, like the outstandingly fleshy Barbera ‘Gisep’, are modern with a lovely intensity of fruit, though not ‘turbo-charged’ as is the current trend. The Barolo, especially the single vineyard wines, on the other hand, have a classic style and structure but a modern purity of flavour. The vineyards are planted on relatively chalky soils, varying from chalky marne to chalky sand in the single vineyards. They rise to 360 metres above sea level in some parts and the Massolino parcel of the Parafada vineyard is one of the area’s most prestigious whereas the Margheria, planted on chalky sand, is renowned for its perfumed, elegant style.
