Established in 1978 by kiwifruit farmer Morton Brown, the original Morton vineyard in Katikati produced its first vintage in 1983. The wines had early success, especially with the Black Label Chardonnay which took gold on the 1984 Royal Easter Wine Show.
In the following years, Morton Estate continued to enjoy a string of successes at various national and international events, winning gold medals every year as well as trophies for the best white wine and best wine overall.
While white wines were the foundations of Morton Estate’s early success, the 90’s saw the emergence of the reds, notably Cabernets Sauvignon, Merlot and their blends had gold medal success in both the domestic and international shows.
In 1995 Morton Estate was sold to John Coney, a New Zealand business man who saw great opportunity for the brand both domestically and internationally.
The 1995 and 1996 Black Label Chardonnay won Gold at the London International wine show, with the 1995 taking the trophy for the “best Chardonnay in the world”.
In the early 2000’s Morton Estate really began making a name for itself with Sparkling wines to huge success again at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards and the Sydney International.
