The vineyards surrounding Hunawihr whisper the timeless story of the village’s intimate bond with the world of wine. Traditions passed down over the centuries seep from the timber-framed, geranium-decked homes that wind their way through the narrow streets of the ancient village to the Sipp Mack winery.

The winery, nestled at the top of the town, is run by Jacques Sipp and his wife, Laura. Nine generations of Jacques’ family have made wine on this site, beginning in 1698.

Sipp Mack is the fruit of the union of two local winemaking families. The winery was formed in 1959, with the marriage of François Sipp of Ribeauvillé and Marie Louise Mack of Hunawihr. In 1983, following his studies in viticulture, enology and business, and two years’ work with farms and wineries in the United States, Jacques returned to Alsace to join his parents at the family estate. He brought Laura, a graduate of the University of California Davis Viticulture and Enology program, back to France with him in 1985.

Jacques and Laura brought new vision to the vineyard and winery operations. Their desire to offer consistent top quality wines that reflect the land that they come from led them to combine Alsatian traditions with modern technology, all while protecting the environment.

They recognize the strong commitment of their staff and the value of team work, and strive to create a fulfilling and dynamic working atmosphere for everyone involved.

Not surprisingly, Sipp Mack has evolved over the years. Fifty percent of the wines produced are now available in several export markets. In spite of the relatively rapid changes, the estate has managed to keep its family-oriented nature and its appreciation of its rich heritage. Locals, wine amateurs from near and far, and tourists looking for “the road less traveled” enjoy sharing conversations (often multilingual!) around the tasting room table, surrounded by beautiful artifacts from the past nine generations.

"Old friends are best. I visited Sipp Mack over a dozen years ago and have enjoyed their Rieslings ever since. This is the complete package: elegant and harmonious with a distinctive "zip" of acidity to keep the succulent fruit fresh. If you have the patience you could keep it for a year or two to see how it develops but it is bang on right now."   -Food & Wine Magazine, April 2013

"Lemon and lime zest and spring flowers on the nose lead to energising citrus fruit and restrained minerals."  17/20.  Ernie Whalley, The Sunday Times. 9th February 2014

"Pristine-clean citrus fruit mixed with ripe red apple means there's a lot to enjoy about this crisp dry white."  17/20.  Martin Moran, The Sunday Times. 9th February 2014

"Nicely balanced, cool, slightly polite Riesling with pear and lime juxtaposed nicely." -Tomas Clancy, Food & Wine Magazine, May 2014

"Good balance and good complexity, ripe stone fruits and lime bitterness, good length." -Stephane Reynard, Food & Wine Magazine, May 2014

"Perfumed fruit on the nose, perky acidity nicely balanced by ripe fruit, tasty length." -Raymond Blake, Food & Wine Magazine, May 2014
