Green Spot Chateau Montelena

Availability: In stock

Green Spot Chateau Montelena is the 2nd edition of the Wine Geese series, following Green Spot Chateau Léoville Barton, released in 2015.

Initially matured in traditional sherry and bourbon casks, Green Spot Chateau Montelena was then finished for 12 months in French oak Zinfandel wine casks, from the prestigious Chateau Montelena in Napa Valley.

Celebrating an Irish heritage, the collaboration between Green Spot and Chateau Montelena is not just the coming together of two unique stories, it’s also the fusion of two unique histories that as one deliver an exceptional whiskey - Green Spot Chateau Montelena Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey.

Nose: Crisp oak combines with the soft sweetness of vanilla, white chocolate and marshmallow, balanced with signature Green Spot red apples and ripe pears, along with pomegranate, cranberries and maraschino cherries, the contribution of the wine cask.

Taste: Sweet mouth coating takes on a dry note thanks to the effect of the wine cask. Pot still spices subside with zesty citrus leading to ripe orchard fruit and red berries. A touch of marzipan and toasted oak add to the complexity.

Finish: Satisfyingly long with pot still spices in harmony with the delicate dry wine contribution.

More information:

Green Spot was originally produced exclusively for the Mitchell family who, commenced trading in 1805 on 10 Grafton St. in the heart of Dublin city as purveyors of fine wines and confectionary. Four generations later, the company is still in the wine and spirits business, under the stewardship of Jonathan Mitchell and his son Robert. The Mitchell family expanded into whiskey bonding in 1887, whereby they sent empty wine, sherry and port casks via horse and cart to the local Jameson Distillery, which were then filled and returned to the Mitchell’s cellar warehouse. There, the whiskeys matured for many years under bond until they were ready to be bottled and sold.

The Green Spot name originated from the Mitchell family’s practice of marking casks of different ages with a daub of coloured paint. There was a ‘Blue Spot’, ‘Red Spot’ and even a ‘Yellow Spot’, but Green Spot emerged as their most popular whiskey and is one of the few “whiskey bonder brands” to survive to modern day.

Single Pot Still Irish whiskey is unique to Ireland in general and to the Midleton Distillery, Co. Cork, in particular, and is regarded as the quintessential style of Irish whiskey. Made from a mash of malted and unmalted barley and then triple distilled in traditional copper pot stills. Pot Still whiskeys are characterised by full, complex flavours and a wonderful, silky mouthfeel.
