Armenia is one of the oldest wine-producing nations in the world. In fact, in 2007 a team of Armenian and Irish archaeologists discovered the Areni-1 winery in the Areni cave complex in the Vayots Dzor region of Armenia. Wine making vessels including a grape press and fermentation vat dated at close to 6100 years old were uncovered as well as the remains of pressed grapes and drinking cups.
More recently there has been a complete renaissance in Armenian wine with the emergence of a number of vineyards and wineries that have benefited from significant investment and expertise of winemakers from abroad. The result is an explosion of very exciting and drinkable wines.
