Chateau d'Yquem 2004 Sauternes Premier Grand Cru Supérieur Classé
More information:
The History of Sauternes is actually the history of Yquem. For generations, this Chateau has represented the very summit of Sauternes. In the 1855 classification its wine was ranked above all others and awarded the title Premier Cru Superieur, a status still justified today. The chateau stands proudly atop the highest point in the Sauternes region. In 1593, the Sauvage family acquired Chateau d’Yquem, which came into the Lur Saluces family when Francoise Josephine de Sauvage married Count Louis Amedee de Lur Saluces in 1785. Count Alexandre de Lur Saluces perpetuated his family’s tradition as manager of Chateau d’Yquem for more than 35 years. His efforts were guided by a single philosophy: an uncompromising approach to the highest quality, vintage after vintage. Thanks to his determination, this great wine’s reputation reached new heights. Pierre Lurton, a passionate winemaker, member of a famous Bordeaux wine family took over the management of the estate in 2004. He is also in charge of Chateau Cheval Blanc in Saint-Emilion and Cheval des Andes in Argentina. Château d'Yquem is undoubtedly a unique wine, unchallenged in terms of purity, complexity, longevity and subtlety Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux

"Wonderful aromas of pineapple, apple and lemon, with loads of botrytis. Full-bodied, but very refined, superfresh and racy. Goes on and on. Fabulous. Incredible purity and brightness. Like a perfectly cut diamond. Pierre Lurton, the manager of Yquem as well as Cheval-Blanc, really wanted to mark his arrival at the legendary estate, so he went to draconian lengths to deliver something superb in 2004. 95-100 points"  100 Points, Wine Spectator

"A blend of 65% Semillon and 35% Sauvignon Blanc with 128 gms/L residual, this is a very good Sauternes for the vintage and for me, superior to the slightly blowsy 2003. A creamy, honeyed nose with hints of almond, apple-blossom and hazelnut. Very good lift. The palate is well-balanced with good acidity, touches of frangipane, honey, quince and Satsuma. Very elegant on the finish with superb length, though you could argue that it does not have the persistency and penetration of the '01. Still, very attractive indeed."  95 points, Robert Parker

"This is a beautiful Yquem, not huge or powerful, but with crispness, honey and freshness, very expressive of the year. The higher than usual proportion of Sauvignon in the blend gives it a real lift."  95 Points, Wine Enthusiast
