From the time prohibition was repealed until the early 1970s, a consolidation of the brewing industry led to the few number of producers in US history. In the mid-70s, a small number of craft brewers appeared and began to make an impact. Add to that the legalisation of home brew production in 1978 and the craft beer movement gathered momentum that continues to the present day.

Today there are over 4000 craft breweries in the United States and American craft beer represents a significant portion of Ireland's craft beer market.
