The Valpiedra Reserva is built upon 22 months ageing in French oak barrels and is composed of: 90% Tempranillo, 6% Graciano and 4% Maturana Tinta - A nearly extinct Rioja variety that ripens late in contrast to Tempranillo and is a variety that once formed a large part of the Rioja blend.
The Reserva displays a vibrant and intense cherry red colour with violet rim. Abundant legs, dense and coloured.
On the nose: High intensity, with a big complexity and elegance in the aromatic nucleus, the mineral and red & black fruits showing up, incense reminiscences. All this goes together with the fine wood notes from the French oak tree, as vanilla, cedar, mild tobacco and spices.
On the palate, initially, excellent smoothness, volume and density develop and the fine grained tannic structure presents, furthering the savoury and complete palate. The freshness from the Graciano makes it more balanced, the finish is a plethora of sweet fruit, spice, oak and floral notes, a lenghty and resounding aftertaste.
"This powerful red is austere in character but shows depth and focus. Sanguine and tarry notes frame a core of currant, licorice and minerals flavours. Drink now through 2030." 94 points, Wine Spectator Magazine, May 2017
