Grenache/Garnacha

Garnacha — known as Grenache in France — is one of the world’s most widely planted and historically significant red grape varieties. Believed to have originated in Aragón, northern Spain, it thrives in hot, dry climates where its thick skins and hardy nature allow it to produce wines bursting with ripe fruit and spice. Today, it remains a cornerstone of many of Spain’s great regions such as Rioja, Navarra, and Campo de Borja, and it also plays a leading role across the south of France and beyond. In style, Garnacha typically delivers juicy red and black fruit flavours — think raspberry, cherry, and plum — often laced with notes of white pepper, herbs, and subtle earthiness. The wines tend to be medium-bodied with soft tannins and a generous, rounded texture. While approachable when young, Garnacha can also produce remarkably complex and age-worthy wines, particularly from old vines growing on stony, high-altitude soils where yields are naturally low and concentration is high.
