Col d’Orcia’s ‘Olmaia’ Cabernet Sant’Antimo 2016 is a striking example of how international varieties can flourish on the sun-drenched, windswept slopes of Montalcino. Coming from one of the region’s most historic estates, this wine reflects both Tuscan warmth and Bordeaux-like poise. The 2016 vintage — widely considered exceptional in Tuscany — delivers beautifully ripe Cabernet fruit shaped by long, even ripening and excellent natural balance.

In the glass, it opens with perfumed notes of blackcurrant, violet, cedar, and graphite, layered with hints of tobacco leaf and warm spice. The palate is structured yet refined, offering concentrated cassis, dark cherry, and savoury herbal complexity wrapped in polished tannins. Fresh acidity and mineral drive carry through to a long, elegant finish. This is a sophisticated, cellar-worthy Cabernet with unmistakable Montalcino character — ideal with bistecca, roast game, or aged pecorino.

One of the most historic properties in Montalcino, Col d’Orcia can trace wine production back to the 1930s, well before Brunello had gained its status as a world-class wine.

In addition to being the third-largest holder of Brunello-designated vineyards in the appellation, Col d’Orcia also stand out for their commitment to quality. The estate (including olive groves and gardens as well as the vineyards) has been worked entirely according to organic principles since 2010, under the quietly aristocratic direction of Count Francesco Marone Cinzano. Certification followed in 2013.

Located in the southern part of the appellation, the wines impress vintage after vintage with their remarkable purity and freshness, as well as their outstanding ability to age.
