The Keyneton Euphonium is Henschke’s refined and contemporary expression of Barossa Valley red wine, drawing on fruit from old, low-yielding vineyards across the Eden and Barossa Valleys. The 2018 vintage brings together Shiraz with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, resulting in a wine that balances Barossa warmth with freshness, structure and remarkable poise.

Aromatically expressive, it opens with layers of ripe blackberry, plum and dark cherry, supported by notes of dried herbs, baking spice, cedar and subtle floral lift. On the palate, the wine is supple yet composed, with fine-grained tannins, integrated oak and a long, savoury finish. While approachable with a good decant, the 2018 also has the depth and harmony to reward further time in bottle, making it equally appealing for current enjoyment or mid-term cellaring.

Drinking window: Now (with decant) – 2032+

The Henschke family have made wine at their estate in the Eden Valley since 1868, with fifth-generation winemaker Stephen Henschke taking over in 1979. Together with his viticulturist wife, Prue, they have taken their two single vineyards, ‘Hill of Grace’ and Mount ‘Edelstone’ and transformed them into two of Australia’s most sought-after wines.

Through a combination of Stephen’s winemaking and great viticulture from Prue, who has re-introduced native plants in their vineyards to improve biodiversity, they have built upon their inheritance and turned this traditional producer into one celebrated worldwide. The original 1860s grain barn at the family property in Keyneton, built from field stone and mud by first-generation winemaker Johann Christian Henschke, now houses the Henschke cellar door. The winery occupies the original wool shed, built next to the grain barn in 1952.

Henschke own three vineyards in the Eden Valley and one in the Adelaide Hills, all of which are farmed in line with biodynamic principles. The eight-hectare ‘Hill of Grace’ vineyard is situated in the historic village of Parrot Hill, four kilometres northwest of Henschke Cellars.

Cabernet Sauvignon (19%)

Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the world’s great red wine varieties, prized for its structure, longevity and unmistakable sense of authority. Naturally high in tannin and acidity, it produces wines with depth and backbone, often built around dark fruit flavours such as blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, alongside classic notes of cedar, tobacco and graphite. These qualities make Cabernet particularly well suited to ageing, where time in bottle softens its frame and allows greater complexity to emerge. While famously associated with Bordeaux, Cabernet Sauvignon expresses itself differently across regions and climates. In warmer areas it shows generosity and ripeness, with plush fruit and a warming richness; in cooler climates, it leans towards restraint, freshness and aromatic lift. What unites all great examples is their ability to reward patience — whether through decanting to allow the wine to open fully, or through years in the cellar. Cabernet is a wine for slower enjoyment, unfolding gradually and offering more with every glass.
