Le Pergole Torte is one of Italy’s great wines, a benchmark for pure, uncompromising Sangiovese. Montevertine’s tiny estate in Radda in Chianti sits high in the hills, where altitude, stony galestro soils and traditional farming combine to produce fruit of exceptional finesse. The 2021 vintage is already being hailed as one of the finest of the last decade, marked by balance, aromatic clarity and beautifully sculpted tannins. Fermented in concrete and aged in large Slavonian casks and French barriques, it remains steadfastly artisanal, expressive and true to place.

In the glass, the 2021 shows lifted aromas of wild cherry, rose petals, pomegranate, sweet herbs and subtle spice. The palate is wonderfully pure and linear, with bright acidity, fine-grained tannins and a sense of weightless intensity that defines great Sangiovese. It’s precise, energetic and deeply nuanced, revealing mineral tension and floral complexity with air. A wine of grace and longevity, Le Pergole Torte 2021 will reward patience in the cellar for many years, but even young it is impossible not to admire its beauty and craftsmanship.

Nestled in the hills of Radda in Chianti lies one of the greatest microclimates of Tuscany. Recognising the importance of the sangiovese grape, in the late 1970s Sergio Manetti made history by refusing to add trebbiano to his blend and turned his back on the Chianti Classico appellation. Today, Le Pergole Torte, one of Chianti’s most iconic and traditional wines, is still bottled as Rosso di Toscana.
